About the artist

Born in Istanbul in 1968, Carus graduated from Mimar Sinan University, Department of ceramics and Glass in 1992. She has been working on art projects as well as graphic design since 1991. Carus earned recognition at the İsmail Hakkı Oygar (1991) and the Vedat Ar (1992) ceramic competitions. Carus who was awarded the Success Award in the area of Idea Presentation at the 2008 National Architecture Awards is a member and the executive of a social project entitled “The Children of Cihangir”.

The artist, who deals with subjects related to society and politics in her work, takes up every opportunity to question the mistakes of the system, the legal and social problems through black humour. She deals with a wide range of concepts from beliefs to environmental issues, from women to exploitation mechanisms, from her childhood to human behaviour. She considers her works a kind of personal responsibility, an activism.

Carus finds similarities between her inner life and the world we live in and transfers these to her works as metaphors. Although she uses mixed media, she prefers ‘porcelain’ about which she says, “I go through a therapeutic process as I produce it”. In recent years she builds her works by first separating them to pieces (or cutting them) and then putting them back together. Her works which consist of sculptures, paintings and installations are sometimes organized individually and at times all together.
